A: All individuals from NESCLiC institutions are encouraged to join our slack channel or email Scott Peterson at sp277@buffalo.edu to join the community. This will not happen automatically. The existing NESCLIC slack will no longer be active.
A: The NESCLiC instructor training program ended with the 2025 cohort. We are refocusing our efforts to build a strong teaching community in data science related skills through Carpentries curriculum and other related lessons. Members who became certified through previous instructor training cohorts are strongly encouraged to join the Northeast Carpentries Community to expand their teaching skills. Any additional individuals who want to get officially certified, may sign up for an instructor training seat directly with Carpentries.
A: Up until 2025, NESCLiC had a signatory institution serving as an institutional member, representing each year’s cohort. The last membership through Dartmouth ended with the 2025 cohort. Individual institutions are encouraged to support Carpentries.org by becoming an institutional member. If your institution is a Carpentries member, you will be allocated a certain number of instructor training seats per year.
A: Yes, this community is open to developing teaching skills in any individual from a New England or Northeast academic institution who is willing to learn how to teach data-related skills to researchers that support the Northeast Carpentries community.
A: The Northeast Carpentries Community’s aim is to foster a collaborative environment for members to share resources, including workshop materials, best practices, and instructors & helpers in support of self-organized workshops and events. By working together, we can increase the reach and impact of data science in the New England and Northeast communities and at our individual institutions through collaborative workshops and events put on by the growing group of instructors and helpers in the Northeast Carpentries Community. This community can also be used to support large workshops over Zoom where every institution can be involved, much like what the University of California Carpentries Community does each year.
